Yield Quality Produce – Save Clean Water
In this project, the soil temperature, humidity and nutrients will be measured using appropriate sensors. The data collected from these sensors will be analyzed and a control signal will be sent to irrigation pumps to adjust the amount of water/nutrients when need be. The system will be controlled using a phone app which will have preprogrammed operation modes that will allow users to select the appropriate mode depending on the type of produce.
The importance of the project is not merely in the resultant good quality produce but also in the proper usage of water since clean water is becoming more and more scarce around the world.
Challenges
One of the challenges is knowing when to irrigate a given plant, because this does not only depend on the humidity level in the soil but also on the soil type, air temperature and weather conditions. This information is vital for the success of the project and is not available online. Proper research should be conducted and looking for information will not be trivial in this case since one has to look for pieces of information from different sources and try to combine them. Some of this information may currently be unavailable since this topic is still being investigated in research centers and universities around the world. Another challenge is to know how to automate the system, make it smart using artificial intelligence. The key part of the system is the computer app that should be the main driver of the system and hence it should be carefully designed to allow controlling the system in a user-friendly manner. This might require some data collection from potential users.
